The tumultuous year reflects several trends for the social media giant. On one side, some competitors and startups continue to rise to take market share. TikTok, for example, has been a large competitor and concern for the social media giant. But other companies like Fanbase, a retail-funded startup from StartEngine, have seen recent momentum after Clubhouse saw a user exodus following updates the community didn't agree with.

The company is currently training its next-gen model Llama 3, where Meta is building massive compute infrastructure to support their future roadmap, including 350,000 x NVIDIA H100 AI GPUs by the end of the year. Zuckerberg added that overall, almost 600,000 x H100-equivalents of compute will be ready, as they're also buying AMD's new Instinct MI300X AI accelerators, not just NVIDIA AI GPUs. Software and consulting anchor strong IBM financial results - SiliconANGLE

A resurgent IBM Corp. reported revenue and earnings in the fourth quarter that beat analyst projections, propelled by accelerating demand for artificial intelligence in general and generative AI in particular.

The company also reaffirmed earlier guidance of 2024 growth in the mid-single digits with particular strength in software and consulting.

“We are the only tech company with a consulting business at scale,” said Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh. Chief Executive2 Arvind Krishna said the company will leverage that advantage this year. “In consulting, we’re going to be absolutely focused on taking share,” he said.

Software and consulting represented 75% of IBM’s revenue base, up from 55% in 2020,” Kavanaugh said. “Our stable revenue stream is about half of IBM’s revenue,” he said.

IBM said its watsonx generative AI and data science platform pulls business across its hardware, software and services offerings. “Our AI platform is fuels innovation and leverages other parts of the portfolio,” Krishna said.

“Its book of business for both watsonx and generative AI roughly doubled between Q3 and Q4; in other words, IBM’s AI-related businesses are not just growing but accelerating,” said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT Inc.

Despite the market’s excitement around generative AI, the “product revenue remains a very small piece of IBM’s business, and the amount of AI-related revenue pull-through in 2024 remains to be seen,” said Jordan Berger, analyst at global research firm Third Bridge Group Ltd.

Although it doesn’t generate the headlines of the AI unicorns, IBM’s business is anchored in use cases its customers care about, King said. “Projects like OpenAI’s ChatGPT get the majority of headlines, but enterprises are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in IBM watsonx and other AI platforms and services that measurably improve their businesses,” he said.

Stable footing

Following three years of uncertainty as the company divested low-margin businesses and sought to define a unique value proposition, IBM appears to be on a stable course. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 4.1% from a year earlier, to $17.38 billion, up 3% in constant currency terms and ahead of consensus estimates of $17.29 billion. Earnings of $3.87 per share, excluding nonrecurring items, beat expectations of $3.79.

Software revenue rose 2% on a constant currency basis, to $7.5 billion, led by 7% growth in the Red Hat business. Red Hat annual bookings were up 17%, including double-digit bookings growth across Red Hat Enterprise Linux, OpenShift, and Ansible.

Transaction processing revenue grew 4%, with the zSystems mainframe line showing uncharacteristically strong growth of 8% in a trough year between new product introductions.

“Seven quarters into the product cycle, zSystems performance had outperformed all other cycles,” Kavanaugh said. “Clients are leveraging zSystems for more and more workloads. It remains an enduring platform.”

Consulting strength

Consulting revenue grew 5.5% spread consistently across the business transformation, technology consulting application operations businesses. “We had a very strong year in the marketplace around consulting in 2023,” Kavanaugh said. He said the current 8% backlog of consulting business was “the strongest we’ve been in some time. Based on backlog realization trends we see an acceleration growth path throughout 2024.”

The only weak point was a 6% decline in sales of security products and services in a market that’s growing more than 10% annually. Kavanaugh called the slowdown “an execution gap on security that we have an opportunity to go fix in 2024.”

The operating margin of 60.1% rose from 59.7% a year earlier. Net cash from operating activities, excluding receivables in IBM’s financing division, was $6.3 billion and the free cash flow of $6.1 billion was up $900 million year-over-year. IBM said free cash flow should total $12 billion in 2024 and expects mid- to upper-single-digit growth across all its major lines of business.

For the full year, IBM reported revenue of $61.9 billion, up 3%, with mid-single-digit growth in its software, consulting and infrastructure businesses. It said its continuing profit margin expansion and cash generation contributed to the successful completion of nine acquisitions in 2023 and growth in its hybrid cloud and AI businesses.

Executives said the macroeconomic conditions are favorable. “This is a remarkably resilient economy,” Krishna said. “We see technology as the answer that helps CEOs stay focused against all headwinds of uncertainty.”

IBM shares rose more than 8% in after-hours trading. The stock hit a nine-year high of $174.86 on today and stood at $188 after-hours.

Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly constructing an extensive compound in Kauai, Hawaii, featuring a unique blend of luxury and survivalist elements. The compound, known as Koolau Ranch, is set to include a 5,000-square-foot underground bunker, complete with its own energy and food supplies. The bunker’s design incorporates a metal door filled with concrete, a feature commonly found in bunkers and bomb shelters.

The project, which reflects a growing trend among Silicon Valley elites for preparedness and luxury, is estimated to cost around $100 million to build on top of the $170 million spent acquiring the land. This brings the total investment to approximately $270 million, according to Wired.

The project has been shrouded in secrecy since the beginning. The methods to acquire the land also give rise to issues and speculation. Zuckerberg initially hid the purchases of land using shell companies and brokers to disguise them. Those shell companies are now involved in several lawsuits claiming they pressured locals with ancestral land rights to sell the land or get into a bidding war at auction with one of the richest men in the world.

The sprawling 1,400-acre compound is planned to house more than just the bunker. It will include over 30 bedrooms and bathrooms, two mansions connected by a tunnel to the bunker and nearly a dozen tree houses linked by rope bridges. The tree houses are designed to provide guests with an immersive treetop experience. The compound also will feature a fitness center, guest houses and other operational buildings.

The county where the compound is being built offers tax incentives for building hurricane-resistant safe rooms, which might partially explain the construction of such a robust structure.

Despite the grand scale of the development, representatives for Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, emphasize their commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the ranch. They point out that the development occupies less than 1% of the land, with the rest dedicated to farming, ranching, conservation and wildlife preservation.

GPU companies design semiconductor chips that feature a large number of cores capable of chewing through certain types of computational workloads. Personal computers, smartphones, gaming consoles, and anything that displays images on a screen ultimately have a GPU working behind the scenes.

In recent years, GPUs have found uses outside of graphics. In data centers, GPUs can be used to accelerate any task that can be effectively split up into chunks. This includes scientific simulations, data analytics, AI training, and AI inference.

Gaming is a huge industry that can drive growth for GPU companies in the long run, but artificial intelligence (AI) may be a bigger opportunity. Advanced large language models like ChatGPT from OpenAI require so much memory and computing power to train and run that clusters of ultra-powerful GPUs are necessary. Cloud computing providers are scooping up GPUs to offer AI services. Tech giant Microsoft (MSFT 0.92%) sees its AI cloud services revenue growing to $10 billion.

With demand for GPUs soaring, there are a few GPU stocks that could deliver market-beating returns for investors.

After a long, largely unimpeded run, NVIDIA’s challenge has finally arrived.

“It's the law of competition,” David Trainer, CEO of research firm New Constructs, told me. “People are going after this space because there's an enormous amount of money to be made in it.”

First among NVIDIA’s challengers are fellow trillion-dollar companies Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. It went largely unnoticed last week, but Google’s announcement of its Gemini AI model left NVIDIA out entirely. Google trained Gemini on its own chips, called Tensor Processor Units, or TPUs, not NVIDIA’s H100s, leaving industry insiders buzzing.

It’s about to get hot in NVIDIA’s kitchen. All year, competitors watched as the chipmaker added hundreds of billions in market cap and became AI operators’ go-to technology. They saw startups scrambling to rent time on its H100 chips, VCs buying thousands of them, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang go from relative unknown to tech icon in a blink. Here comes their response.

After ceding much of the early generative AI boom to NVIDIA, these competitors are releasing — and proving the value of — chips that can run large language models in a similar fashion. Tech giants like Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft are designing their own AI chips and training models on them. Rival chipmakers like AMD and Intel are producing AI-optimized chips themselves. And amid a supply crunch, startups are willing to try alternatives. Now, after a recent spate of releases, NVIDIA’s easy times are ending.

Paramount Global (NASDAQ:PARA) rose 1.7% in after-hours trading on a report that David Ellison made a preliminary bid for National Amusements, the Redstone family company that controls the media giant.

Ellison has also had talks with Paramount about merging his Skydance Media film and studio into the media company, according to a Bloomberg report late Wednesday, which cited people familiar. Both sides have advisers and are exchanging information.

On Friday Bloomberg reported that Apollo Global (APO) is considering making a bid for National Amusements, which owns movie theaters and controls 77% of Paramount's voting stock. Apollo (APO) is one of a number of investors who have reached out to the investment bank representing the Redstone family.

The latest report comes after the WSJ reported earlier this month that Ellison, the son of billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, was evaluating a bid that involved merging his company Skydance Media with Paramount (PARA), which owns the Paramount Pictures movie studio and cable networks including MTV and Nickelodeon.

Skydance, the production house behind Top Gun: Maverick, has emerged as a leading candidate to take over Redstone’s National Amusements, according to a Financial Times report last month, which followed a report from Puck News.

Last month, there were also reports that Warner Bros. Discovery's (WBD) CEO David Zaslav held talks with Paramount (PARA) to discuss a potential merger.
